woxy.com is dead
Saturday, 23 September 2006

My favorite radio station of all time, woxy.com, formerly 97X (97.7 FM from Oxford, Ohio) is finally dead. Living in Ohio until about one year ago, I listened to them for nearly 20 years. It was the best radio station covering the alternative/indie/modern rock music scene I found anywhere. They made an interesting move a few years ago to sell off their FM frequency and go all Internet keeping their call letters, trademark, and music catalog. I supported them went they added a subscription model for the hi fidelity feeds to keep the business alive.

Alas, the business failed. I wondered why? In addition to subscriptions, they had advertising and links from every song in the playlist window to an online store for affiliate kickbacks. They leveraged just about every possible avenue. However, much of the independent artists is available free for download already on the net for promotion. Ultimately, however, I think the market for this music is too small. Hip-hop and rap are much bigger for the youth.

On the other hand, there are soo many independent and modern rock bands, there must be a fanbase, no? Well, I think the problem may be that a large portion of the market and fanbase are making the music! The effect is that it skews the perception of the purchasing power of that market.
